Corporal Punishment
Recently, I read an article in the Indy Star discussing the issue of paddling in Indianapolis public schools. The article stated that 3/44 schools admitted to paddling students in the past year. I couldn't believe that corporal punishment had not been outlawed in Indiana, as it has been in most states. Then I started to wonder if corporal punishment is the way to go. I do not believe that violence is the answer, nor do I condone it in any sense, but the issue of paddling in the surrounding area's public schools really makes one wonder, is it more effective than just suspending our students and putting them in detention for their negative actions? Would paddling our kids instead of making them clean floors be a better way to punish them? Physical pain is more intimidating and embarrassing than having to serve an hour and a half detention. However, I do not think children should be paddled for simple things like forgetting a homework assignment or being late for a class. Paddling should only be enforced when a student has committed a serious offense, such as physical fights at school or streaking down the hallway. So, think about it. Is paddling more effective than regular punishments? Or is it just another one of the worst ideas of our lifetime?
